INDIGO JONES, THE 13 SONG EPIC

I am about to tell you about the true story behind Michael Paul Murphy’s album, Indigo Jones. A deeply personal and reflective album, blending real-life experiences with musical storytelling.

The Origin

Michael attended Lawrence University in Wisconsin. Through this school he was able to join a “study abroad” program and spent 3 months in London, England at their sister school. His time of reflection in England became the backdrop for the creation of the album. Spending hours in the Covent Garden of St. Paul’s Church, he found solace in writing while grappling with emotional turmoil from a difficult relationship. Michael used his writing as a coping mechanism to process what he was going through.

The title Indigo Jones was inspired by the name of the Cathedral’s architect, Inigo Jones, reflecting the blending of real historical figures with Michael's personal journey. This album became an outlet for self-reflection, diving into the complexities of love, loss, and life.

The Cowboy Metaphor

Michael identifies with the image of a cowboy, a symbol of freedom and rootlessness. Just as the cowboy is always traveling and doing what he loves, Michael sees himself in a similar light as a musician always on the road. However, the cowboy’s lifestyle also comes with loneliness and the inability to maintain close relationships, which parallels Michael’s struggles with his love life while pursuing his passion for music.

3 Key Tracks from Indigo Jones

  1. "My Request"

    • An Americana-style song that centers around Michael’s internal conflict with his relationship. It explores a plea to a partner to let go if they can’t be loyal, as he struggles to move on emotionally despite caring deeply. This is Michael’s proudest creation on the album due to its melody and emotional depth.

  2. "Last Station"

    • This is the only song on the album that wasn’t solely written by Michael. It was co-written with his brother and features themes of purgatory, limbo, and the uncertainty of love—wondering if the next "station" in life will bring happiness or heartbreak.

  1. "Traveler"

    • The iconic story of the rootless cowboy. This song encapsulates the feeling of wandering through life, much like a “cowboy,” or a musician on tour, living out of a car and constantly searching for peace but still embracing the journey.

Symbolism in the Album

Michael’s use of the cowboy as a symbol reflects his duality as an artist and a person—constantly moving and creating but finding it difficult to settle emotionally. The metaphor of riding a horse with a guitar on his back ties his love for music with the physical and emotional journey he’s been on.

"Indigo Jones" represents both a specific time in Michael’s life and a broader narrative about the challenges of balancing love, life, and art. The music, written in a moment of heartache and self-reflection, carries that emotional weight while exploring themes that many people can relate to: personal growth, the pain of loss, and the hope for resolution.
